James Carey (Jim) founded the law firm to apply his years of experience working in business law to guide small to mid-size companies through the issues they face, and to provide assistance to larger companies on specific matters.  In addition to his deal work, Jim works with companies who have legal needs but who are not (yet!) large enough to employ their own Chief Legal Officer.  Your company represents your life's work.  Jim understands that.   Jim will represent your company with integrity and honesty.

Before going to law school, Jim was a business owner.  He also served as a stock broker at a major national firm.  Following law school, Jim worked in the Chicago office of one of the largest law firms in the country.  Upon returning to his Michigan roots, Jim has focused his work on small to mid-size companies and taught business law classes.  He served as a law school professor and the director of the law school’s graduate program in Corporate Law & Finance.  Jim’s work, school, and legal experience give him a unique ability to understand, and to explain, those areas where your business and the law intersect.

As a part of Jim’s business planning services, he works with company owners and entrepreneurs to coordinate personal and business estate plans address the succession of business ownership, property and other issues that will benefit the family and the business.  

Carey Law Offices, also offers a full range of estate planning and succession services which can structure your financial affairs to increase the benefits to your family and by helping to minimize taxes upon death.  

In addition to crafting estate planning documents, Jim has taught Wills, Trusts and Estates to hundreds of students and is able to draw on this experience when confronted with complicated or unique situations.
